Spent $900 on solar panels for my semi truck, and two weeks later the alternator died and they did nothing

The panels can't keep up with my APU and fridge running all night in Phoenix, so I'm back to idling and burning diesel anyway. Has anyone actually made truck solar work or did I just light $900 on fire?
