Just found out my 2011 Hyundai Sonata had a engine recall that expired 6 months before mine blew
I was scrolling through some car forum last night and stumbled on a thread about Theta II engines. Turned out Hyundai had a extended warranty recall on them for connecting rod bearing failure, but it only applied up to 120,000 miles. My engine gave out at 122,400 miles last month and the dealership quoted me $4,500 for a new one. I had no idea this recall even existed until I saw that post. Now I'm wondering how many other people missed the cutoff by a few thousand miles like me. Has anyone else dealt with a recall that expired just before you needed it?

My buddy had basically the same thing happen with his 2012 Sonata. He drove it to work one day and the engine just started knocking on the highway, then seized up completely. He found out the recall was there but his car had 124k on it, so Hyundai told him tough luck. He ended up having to pay for a used engine out of pocket and it was a huge pain. It's crazy how many people miss these things by such a small gap.

Wait, dont you think the dealership could have worked with you on that though? I mean, I get that the mileage cutoff is what it is, but @fiona_johnson82's buddy had the same problem and they still made him pay full price. It feels like these companies know exactly what they're doing with those deadlines, like they set them just tight enough that a lot of people slip through. Hyundai knows these engines fail, thats why they had the recall in the first place. Idk, maybe its just me but I feel like if a part is known to be defective, they should cover it regardless of a few hundred miles over the limit. Especially when you paid for a car that was supposed to last longer than that.
