That time my buddy told me I was 'pressing too hard' on the clutch during a hill start

I was at a light on a steep hill in San Francisco last Tuesday and stalled out twice. My friend in the passenger seat just said, 'You're mashing it like a button, not squeezing it.' I shifted to using just the ball of my foot and let the bite point grab before giving gas. First try after that was smooth as butter. Anyone else had a small tweak like that save them from looking like a fool?
