A guy on the shop floor asked why I still touch off every tool by hand, and I didn't have a real answer
He runs a probe on his Haas and swears he hasn't scrapped a setup in 8 months. Made me wonder if I'm just being stubborn about the old way, so what do you all actually trust for first part offsets?
Edge finder and a test cut has saved me more times than any probe ever could. Probes lie when chips get on the tip, when the stylus gets bumped, when the battery is low, and you won't know until the first part is already in the scrap bin. I've watched guys trust a probe result that was off by three thou because a chip sat in a dowel hole. Hand touch-off plus a quick skim cut shows me the truth before I commit a $200 block of aluminum. A probe is a tool, same as anything else, and tools drift. My hands and eyes don't need a battery.
