Old timer's advice on coolant ratios saved me $800 last month

Back in 2017 at a shop in Dayton, this guy named Pete who'd been running mills since the 70s told me to trust the refractometer over the mixing charts. I figured he was just set in his ways, but I always had way more tool wear than the numbers suggested. Last month I finally checked my sump at 6% concentration instead of the 10% the chart said, and my inserts are lasting twice as long. Anyone else got a rule of thumb from an old hand that beat the manual?
