DAE remember learning from printed library books before video tutorials?

Back in 2009 I had to pick between a $35 used Java book from Half Price Books or a free online course, and I went with the book because our internet kept dropping. Took me 5 months to finish it, but writing notes in the margins stuck way better than watching videos ever did. What was your first real learning source?
