Appreciation post: I stopped needing college when my side job out-earned my degree path, but did the timing help or hurt me?
I left school after 3 semesters at Kent State back in 2019, mostly because my landscaping side gig was pulling in $600 a week while I was scraping by on loans. For the next two years I hustled hard, and by 2021 I was running a full crew in Cleveland making decent money for a 23 year old with no diploma. Here is the split I keep going back and forth on. One side says dropping out was smart because I got a 4 year head start on real work while my old roommates were still writing essays and racking up debt. The other side says I boxed myself in, because when the work dried up in 2023 I had nothing on paper to show for it. My cousin did the exact same thing and ended up going back at 26 for a nursing degree, and now she says the gap did not matter at all. So which is it, did leaving early give us a boost or just delay the same problem? I want to hear from people who were out for 5 or more years, did the no degree thing ever actually block a door you cared about?
