Found a 1987 census about comic shops that caught me off guard
Was digging through some old industry archives last week for a project and stumbled on a census from 1987 that counted only about 600 comic book stores in the whole country. That number surprised me because my hometown of Akron alone had three back then. Now there are thousands of shops, but also way more online sellers and fewer readers per store. Do you think the local comic shop model is healthier now than in the late 80s, or did the direct market boom just mask the real problems?
