Hot take: I used to hate going to smaller comic shops but one in Portland changed my mind

I always thought the big chain stores had the best selection and organization, so I avoided the little hole-in-the-wall places. Last month I stopped into Cosmic Monkey Comics in Portland and the owner was just sitting there reading a Silver Age Flash, not bothering me at all. He ended up pulling out a box of 90s indie books from under the counter that weren't even on the floor yet. Found a near-mint copy of a Jim Mahfood book for $3 that I'd been hunting online for months. Anyone else have a small shop that totally flipped their opinion about where to shop?

Wait, that whole box was just sitting under the counter? That's wild. Most shop owners would have that stuff priced up and on a shelf the second they got it. So the owner really just let you dig through his personal stash like that? That's the kind of thing that would make me a loyal customer for life. A $3 find like that is almost unheard of these days with everyone checking eBay prices. Stories like this make me wonder what other treasures are hiding in plain sight at those smaller spots. Good on you for taking that chance.

Right @wren_walker62, read about a guy finding vintage baseball cards in a barn last week, this is just like that.
