I used to think those heated dive hoods were a waste of money

After a 3-hour job in 38-degree water near Seattle, my buddy let me try his. My hands were numb but my head was totally fine, which never happens. Anyone have a brand they like that doesn't get bulky under the helmet?

My Fourth Element hood made a huge difference on a long Lake Michigan survey dive. It's thin enough that my helmet still fits right over it. I was actually warm for once, which is saying something.

I read a review in a dive magazine last year that tested a bunch of heated hoods for fit under helmets. The ScubaPro one scored really high for being low-profile. They said the wires are flat and don't create pressure points, which makes sense if you're wearing it for hours. That three hour mark is where the cheap gear always shows its flaws. My old hood would have given me a headache long before my hands got cold.

My old wool hat worked fine in the Sound last winter.
