Changing my mind about thermal paste after a 3 AM rescue in Denver

I used to think any old thermal paste was fine, but last month I fixed a buddy's overheating rig that had been running hot for like a year. Turns out the cheap stuff he used had completely dried out, and swapping to a decent brand dropped his temps by 15 degrees Celsius. Now I actually check what paste people have on hand before I do any CPU work, it saves me a second trip. Anyone else run into this with older builds or do you just always replace it on sight?

The dried out paste thing is way more common than people think, especially in machines that sit in dusty rooms or run hot all the time. Once that stuff turns to chalk or crumbles, it stops doing its one job, and you might as well be running without any paste at all. Its wild how much heat transfer depends on that thin layer being fresh. People like to blame fans or case airflow first, but the paste is the real silent killer in older builds. Honestly, now I treat it like oil in a car, just replace it every couple of years and you never have to worry about the surprise 15 degree jump.
