Swapped thermal paste on 40 laptops and the cheap stuff beat the fancy tube every single time
Last month I ran through a batch of 40 old ThinkPads from a school surplus lot, and I did half with a $6 tube of basic silicone paste and half with a $15 tube of that metal based stuff everyone raves about on here. The cheap stuff held temps 2 to 4 degrees cooler on average after a 30 minute stress run, and it did not dry out or pump out at all over the 6 weeks I kept checking them. The metal paste actually squeezed out past the edges on a few of the tighter coolers, which is a mess I do not want to deal with on a customer machine. Everybody in these threads acts like you are cutting corners if you do not buy the premium tube, but for everyday office and school hardware there is just no real payoff. I have done hundreds of repastes over the last 5 years and the biggest temp drops always came from cleaning the old crusty stuff off properly, not from what I put back on. A pea sized dot and a good clamp will beat a fancy brand name every time. Anyone else see the same thing or am I crazy here? What paste are you actually using on refurbs?
