Went from desktop builds to laptop board swaps, the workflow shock was real
I spent almost 8 years doing nothing but desktop repairs, so swapping a motherboard in a tower was second nature. Last summer a client brought in a Dell laptop and I figured, how hard can it be? Turns out the entire layout is a puzzle, ribbon cables everywhere and screws in 12 different sizes. I used to have a whole bench of spare parts to test with, now I'm working with a single logic board and a multimeter. It took me 3 tries just to get the keyboard ribbon seated right without crushing the latch. What really got me was the thermal paste placement, you need to hit the exact right thickness or the thing throttles in 10 minutes. Anyone else make the jump from towers to portables and feel like a total rookie again? How long did it take you to get efficient at it?

The whole “single logic board” thing hits hard because in desktops you can swap parts to isolate a fault, but with laptops you have to trace every trace and flex cable just to see if the board is even alive. Honestly, it took me a solid 6 months before I stopped cussing at ribbon latches.
