Found a trick for smoothing curbs without a $300 edger

I've been finishing curbs for about 15 years now and watched the old guys do it with those hand edgers. Couple months ago on a job in Phoenix I was rubbing a curb with a wet sponge and realized if I put a little burlap sack over the sponge it gives that real smooth finish without gouging. Saves me about 20 minutes per curb compared to fighting with the metal edger. Has anyone else tried something like that or am I just late to the party?

Man that burlap trick sounds legit. I just used an old cotton t-shirt wrapped around a drywall sponge once and it worked way better than I expected, held up for like a whole driveway before it started shredding. The yellow sponges are garbage for sure though, I grab the blue ones now they last way longer.

Ha! Bro, I'm so late to this party I'm still trying to figure out why my curbs look like they were finished by a toddler with a butter knife. I've been out there cussing at my metal edger for years, and now you're telling me a wet sponge and some burlap could've saved my sanity? Watch, next week I'll probably hear about a stick and a leaf that do the job even better. What kind of sponge are you using? The yellow ones fall apart on me in like two seconds.
