Update: found out my slump test was garbage after a guy in Fresno called me out
I've been testing slump the same way for about 6 years, and last Tuesday a batch plant guy named Duane watched me do it on a driveway pour in Fresno. He asked why I was setting the cone on the grass instead of a flat plate, and I didn't have a good answer. Turns out the base was sinking a little every time, so my readings were coming out low and I was adding water I never needed. We redid it on his steel plate and got almost 3/4 inch more, which changed how we finished the whole pour. What's the dumbest habit you picked up early and didn't catch for years?
Man, that sinking base thing is sneaky cause you'd never notice it by eye. Glad Duane caught it before you finished the pour, sounds like it saved you a real mess. We all got at least one of those habits floating around.
