My Series X started making jet engine noise after 8 months

Bought an Xbox Series X last November and it was dead quiet until last week. Now the fan sounds like a vacuum cleaner every time I play something like Cyberpunk or Elden Ring. Tried cleaning the vents with compressed air and that did nothing. I pulled the thing apart and found the thermal paste was basically dried out crust. Reapplied some Arctic MX-4 I had lying around and it got quieter but still louder than when new. Honestly thinking about just selling it and building a PC instead. Anyone else had their console crap out way too early like this?

Buddy of mine had the exact same problem with his Series X, like clockwork at month 9. He tried that compressed air trick too, nothing changed. Ended up sending it to Microsoft under warranty and they sent back a refurb unit. Six months later, same thing happened again. He just sold it on Craigslist and went back to his old One X until he could afford a custom PC build. Said the noise was driving his wife crazy when she tried to watch TV in the same room.

Went back to his old One X" is kind of a funny way to put it since the One X was also loud as hell with certain games, but I get the point. The fan noise on these newer consoles does seem to be a lottery more than a design fix, and hearing about two units back to back is rough. Is the whole "premium quiet console" thing just marketing hype when the bearings are bound to give out that fast?

Huh, I used to be all "it's a premium console, it's fine, people just get unlucky" but hearing about your buddy getting burned twice in a row... yeah that changes my mind a bit. Like, I figured the first one was a fluke but a refurb doing the same thing six months later sounds like a design flaw more than anything. Honestly makes me wonder how many of these things are actually reliable long term or if they just get quiet for a few months before the fan bearings give out again. Kinda glad I stuck with my PS4 Pro for now.
