Rant: guy at GameStop said 30fps is fine because 'your eyes can't see more,' and I can't stop thinking about it
I was in line at the GameStop on 5th in Eugene on Saturday, and a guy was telling his buddy that 30fps on consoles is fine because human eyes top out at 24fps anyway. I stood there holding a used controller and said nothing, but it bugged me the whole walk home. The science thing is one side: movies use motion blur and 24 frames looks smooth, so some folks say your brain fills in the gaps. The other side is that a mouse sweep across a screen at 60Hz versus 144Hz feels different in your hand, and I don't think that's placebo. Console folks get locked hardware and games that mostly just work, PC folks pay $1200 and then fight a driver for 3 nights. Honest ask: is 30fps actually fine for you on a TV, or does the stutter wreck it once you've seen 60? And if it's fine, why did the remasters all bump it up?
My eyes also "can't see" the difference between a $70 game and a $20 one yet here we are. 30fps is fine until you play something at 60 and then going back feels like your TV is broken.
