Spent 3 hours trying to make my $20 controller work because of one dumb USB port

Last Saturday I tried to hook up a cheap wired controller to my PC and it just would not register. I tried 4 different cables and even dug out an old PS2 adapter before I figured out the issue was a dead USB port on my case, not the controller. The fix took about 10 seconds once I moved the cable to a port on the back. Has anyone else lost an entire afternoon to a port that quietly died?
