More street cameras went up last month, but the city council meeting had no discussion on it
I saw three new cameras on my block in the past few weeks. The city council meeting minutes show no discussion, which is strange for such a visible change.

Tbh that lack of discussion is the real issue. It makes you wonder if this was a quiet deal with a security company or maybe even police department. Honestly feels like they're hoping nobody notices so they can avoid the whole privacy debate.

Last spring, our town quietly added license plate readers without telling anyone. We only found out because a cop mentioned it offhand at a community event. A group of us started emailing city council members daily and sharing info on Nextdoor. After two weeks, they agreed to hold a public forum about the policy.

What happens to all that data after it's collected? Could it get sold to companies that track where people shop or live? Imagine a repo man using it to find cars he wants to take back. Or what if it's used to see who goes to protests or clinics? Once that info is out there, it's hard to get back. Makes you wonder if the real cost is more than just money.
