Why did the county clerk in Reno tell me to read the fine print on my ballot receipt
I went to drop off my ballot in Reno last Tuesday and the clerk leaned over and whispered that the machine's printed receipt never matches the count you watch on screen unless you ask for a paper audit on the spot, so has anyone else caught that gap at their polling place?
Watched my own receipt print out last time and felt like a genius for about ten seconds, then realized I couldn't tell if the numbers on the screen were even the same race. Story of my life, thinking I'm being all careful when I'm really just squinting at a thing I don't understand. That clerk basically handed you the cheat code and most people wouldn't even know to ask. Paper audit on the spot sounds like the real move here. If the receipt and the screen don't line up and nobody checks, what's even the point of printing it.
