Unpopular opinion: the daily paper log died a slow death on my jobsites and I miss the messy old thing
I have run small remodel jobs around Boise for close to twenty years and the thing I miss most is the busted up spiral notebook we used to pass around every morning. Every trade wrote their own notes in it, the electrician would scratch in a change in pen, the framer would cross it out in marker, and by Friday the pages looked like a crime scene but everybody knew where the job stood. Last month I finally moved my whole punch list and daily reports to a tablet app my client pushed on me, and it has been a mess. The app wants a photo, a location tag, and a category for every little thing, so my lead guy spent 40 minutes logging one crooked outlet instead of fixing it. Tuesday I watched a sub stand in the driveway for 15 minutes trying to get a signal just to mark a wall as framed. I get that owners love the paper trail and the timestamps, but nothing on that screen tells me what actually happened that day the way a coffee stained page with three different handwriting styles did. Has anyone found a middle ground that keeps the office happy without turning the crew into data entry clerks?
