Just realized my electrician friend's $1200 bid beat 3 bigger companies

He came in last Monday and found a bad neutral in the panel that the others missed, plus he actually showed me the code section in his book. Has anyone else had better luck hiring someone you already knew instead of the flashy outfits?

Wow, that hits home. What kind of stuff did yours pull in that the big names missed? Was it a one time lucky grab or did it keep happening over and over? I keep hearing the little guys pick up things the fancy models skip right over, but I want the real story, not just talk.
