Please don't skip the brick session, I learned the hard way at mile 4

After 5 months of training in Tulsa, I thought I could just do the bike and run separately since my legs felt fine. First real 5k off the bike last Saturday, my quads turned to concrete by mile 4 and I walked the last stretch. The swim and bike were great, but that transition is where everyone I know actually gets wrecked. Has anyone else found a specific drill that helps your legs shift gears faster, or do you just suffer through it like I did?
