Saw an 80 year old sprint tri in Phoenix and it wrecked my excuses

I drove out to watch the Desert Splash sprint last Saturday just to scout the swim course. There was this guy, white hair, probably 80, running the 5k part with a pace that made me embarrassed to be standing there. My couch to 5k plan has been stuck on week 3 for like 6 weeks because of gummy knees, but he had a visible limp and still passed three people. It hit me that I'm not waiting on my body, I'm waiting on my brain to stop being dramatic. I signed up for the same race next year and put a $100 entry fee on my credit card so I can't back out. Has anyone else used a random stranger's finish time to guilt themselves into registering? Because that's where I'm at now.
