The guy at the bike shop told me to skip the tri bike for my first race
I was about 3 months into training for my first Olympic distance tri in Cincinnati and I was all set to drop $2,200 on a used Cervelo I found on Facebook. The mechanic at Trek Bicycle checked my fit on a road bike and basically said save your money, the aero bars won't help you if you can't hold the position for 40 minutes. He was right I rode my 2015 Giant Defy and finished in 1:45 for the bike leg, which felt fine. Did anyone else get talked out of a big gear purchase early on and end up glad you listened?

My first race I almost bought a $3,000 tri bike before I could even clip in properly. A friend let me borrow his old road bike with clip on bars and I was grateful because I realized how much I needed to work on handling and bike fit first. That extra season on the road bike made me a stronger rider overall than if I'd just jumped on the aero setup.

Why buy a road bike when you'll just buy the tri bike next season anyway and waste more money in the long run?
