Went to a triathlon clinic in Phoenix and watched a coach tell a beginner to just 'push through the cramps'...

I couldn't believe it. This guy showed up in his first pair of clip-in pedals, almost fell over twice, and the coach just yelled at him to ignore the pain. Like, cramps can tear your muscle dude. Didn't say anything about salt or water. Anyone else see this kind of 'tough guy' coaching ruin someone's first race?

...and honestly that kind of advice is just asking for trouble. What actually worked for me was taking salt tabs during my longer runs and really watching my water intake before the race. I used to get these nasty calf cramps around mile 8 and a friend told me to just drink more water. That helped a little but adding electrolytes was the REAL game changer. I also switched to a sports drink with more sodium and that pretty much fixed the problem for good.

Sipping pickle juice before a run kept me from cramping up at mile 10.
