Picked up a tipping trick from an old hand in Baltimore...
I was leveling a lattice boom crawler for like 6 months and always had to re-shim the outriggers twice per job. Then a retiree at the yard pointed out I was setting the floats on loose gravel instead of matting it down first, how long did it take you guys to stop making dumb newb mistakes?

My uncle was a crane operator back in the 80s and he told me the same thing about matting down the ground first. He said he saw a guy sink a float into soft dirt once and the whole rig tipped like 10 degrees, scared the crap out of everyone. I guess it's one of those lessons you either learn from a old timer or learn the hard way lol. I still catch myself forgetting to check the ground pressure before setting up on a site that looks solid.

Oh come on, soft ground isn't that big of a deal if you actually know what you're doing and take your time. I've set up on way sketchier terrain without mats and never had an issue, maybe people just need to quit panicking and trust their equipment a little more.
