Vent: that job in downtown Austin last summer still has me second-guessing my signaling system.

Operators who use hand signals, do you ever feel like a radio headset is faster, or is it just not worth the hassle when one guy forgets to charge his batteries and you're stuck waving arms for three hours?

Notice that hand signals actually have a big advantage in loud environments though... radios can cut out or get garbled when there's heavy machinery running or wind noise. I've seen guys on concrete crews screaming into their mics while the guy ten feet away can't understand a word they're saying. Hand signals are universal and don't need batteries or signal range. Plus they work great for crane operators who need to stay focused on the load without a radio distracting them. Just gotta make sure everyone's trained on the same system first.
