An underwriter in Omaha told me my 3 hard inquiries were killing my score, so I stopped letting landlords and car dealers run my credit for every little quote.

I dropped from a 720 to a 650 just from rate shopping without knowing about the 45-day window, so now I ask upfront if they actually need to pull it or if I can bring my own report instead, has anyone else had a landlord insist on running it anyway?

Honestly, them running your credit shows they're serious about following the rules properly.

Did you ever just hand them a copy of your own credit report from one of the free sites? I tried that once and the landlord looked at me like I was handing him a fake ID. He said they only trust what comes straight from the bureaus. So I told him fine, but I'm not paying his $50 application fee if he pulls my credit more than once in 30 days. He got all huffy about it but eventually agreed. I still think it's a racket how they can ding you just for trying to rent a place.
