My nephew said his first credit card application got denied because he had 'no file', which is wild to think about now.

I remember when getting a store card at Sears was basically a rite of passage, but hearing that made me realize how much the whole system has tightened up and how you practically need a score just to start building one, right?

Wasn't there a thing a few years back about some credit bureaus letting you add your phone bill to your report? I heard it was supposed to help people with thin files, but I don't know if it actually worked or if any lenders even pay attention to it. Seems like another hoop to jump through just to prove you're not a risk.

You're right about Experian Boost! It adds things like phone and utility payments to your Experian report. I tried it a few years back when my credit history was pretty short. It did give my score a small bump, maybe 10 points, but not every lender uses the boosted score. It's a free tool, so it can't hurt to try if you need a little help.
