Rant: I used to think 2FA was overkill until my cousin got hacked

My cousin in Austin lost his Instagram account last week because he didn't have two-factor turned on, and the hacker posted crypto scams to his whole feed. He told me it took him 3 days to get it back and he missed a freelance job lead during that time. Has anyone else had to help a family member recover after skipping 2FA?

2FA on Instagram saved my sister's account last year. She had the same thing happen - some hacker got her password from a data breach and tried to post crypto stuff. I walked her through setting up Google Authenticator on her phone, took maybe 5 minutes. The key is using an authenticator app instead of SMS codes, because SIM swapping is real. She now keeps a printed list of backup codes in her wallet too, just in case her phone dies.
