Warning: My email got taken over last Tuesday and it was a mess

I got a weird text from my sister asking if I sent her a link, which I didn't. Logged into my email and saw a bunch of password reset requests for my bank and social media. Someone had gotten in, probably from a data leak I didn't know about. I spent the next two hours changing every password and turning on two-factor authentication for everything. Has anyone else had to clean up after a hack, and what's the first thing you check?

My first move is to check if they ordered a thousand pizzas to my address.

That sounds like a total nightmare to deal with on a random Tuesday. Honestly, the password reset requests are the scariest part because it means they were really trying to get into everything. Changing all those passwords must have been so draining. I always check my sent folder first, just to see if any weird emails went out to my contacts.
