Watched a guy at my local coffee shop get his laptop hijacked in 5 minutes

I used to think public WiFi was fine if you weren't doing banking. Then last week I was at Brew House on 3rd Street and saw this dude log into his work email real quick. Within maybe 5 minutes his screen started glitching and he got a ransom note. I always told myself 'it won't happen to me' but seeing it happen to someone else in person changed my mind. Now I VPN everything even checking the weather. Has anyone else seen something like this go down in person?
