That time the coffee shop's WiFi made me rethink all my email habits

I was sitting at The Daily Grind in Portland last Tuesday when my laptop froze for five minutes after clicking send on a huge email. Turns out the shop's guest network was throttling uploads to 56k speeds during peak hours. Is this a common tactic or did I just pick the wrong coffee shop?

Same thing happened to me at a Starbucks in Seattle... brutal upload speeds.

Got a buddy who tried uploading a video at a Starbucks in downtown Portland. Took him 15 minutes just to get a 2-minute clip up. He just gave up and used his phone's hotspot instead.
