Found out my city's recycling rate is only 18% from a report on the town website
I was looking up trash pickup schedules and saw the annual waste report. It said our actual recycling rate is 18%, not the 50% I always assumed. I found it in the public documents section under 'Environmental Services'. Has anyone else checked their local numbers and been surprised?

Wow, that's a gut punch. I mean, I see so many blue bins out on the curb every week that I just assumed we were doing okay. Makes you wonder what actually gets sorted out at the plant.

It's the same with those "green" products at the store. The package screams recycled, but the fine print says it's only 10% post-consumer material. We're surrounded by marketing that makes us feel better without the numbers to back it up.
