Question about a conversation that made me question my job hunt strategy

I was talking to a guy at a coffee shop in Austin last week who said I was wasting time applying to big companies online. He said his buddy landed a gig after just 3 coffee chats with people in the office. Has anyone else heard that personal connections beat job boards that hard?

Wait, his buddy skipped the online black hole and just had coffee? How does that even work without knowing someone there first? That sounds like he walked in cold and talked his way into a job over a latte, which is insane if true. I mean, I've heard referrals are golden, but 3 coffee chats instead of the usual 50 online apps? That's wild.

His buddy probably skipped the online black hole entirely and let the office know he was human first (which matters way more than a resume). Big companies get thousands of apps, so a warm intro from someone already inside skips the digital pile and lands you straight on their radar. That coffee shop guy might be onto something, even if it feels too simple compared to firing off applications all day.
