Unpopular opinion: I think the 'always hire a pro' advice for home wiring is wrong

Honestly, I replaced all the outlets in my 1980s house in Springfield myself over two weekends. I watched a lot of videos, bought a voltage tester for $25, and took my time. The before and after was huge, my old plugs were loose and some didn't even work. Now everything is snug and safe, and I saved about $500. Has anyone else done their own basic electrical and had it turn out fine?

Glad it worked for you but that's a huge gamble. A voltage tester doesn't catch every mistake, and a bad connection can burn your house down years later.

Tbh a voltage tester is just the first step. I also made sure to get the right wire connectors and tighten the screws down real good. If you follow the steps and double check your work, it's not a huge gamble. My house hasn't burned down in the three years since I did it, and the peace of mind from having safe, working outlets is worth it.
