Vent: My main work laptop's hinge snapped clean off yesterday.
It's a Dell XPS 13 I've had for about 4 years, and now the screen just flops back. I'm stuck deciding whether to pay for a costly repair or just replace the whole machine. Anyone dealt with a major laptop hinge failure and what did you end up doing?

My old XPS 15 hinge gave out after three years, and the repair quote was a joke. I ended up using it as a very expensive, semi-stationary desktop monitor until I saved up for a replacement.

Is it really that common for the hinges to fail? I've had my XPS for over four years now and it still opens fine, just gets a bit stiff sometimes. Maybe it depends on how often you move it around or just luck of the draw.
