Yeah the black smoke thing is no joke. My old pickup did that and it turned out to be a clogged filter too, whole cabin smelled like a campfire lmao. Good call by @rivera.emma on checking it regularly, saves a headache later. Sometimes I swear mechanics are just car wizards.
Saw a video once where a guy said black smoke can also mean the engine's getting too much fuel, like from a sticky injector. They cleaned his up with some special additive in the tank and it cleared right up. Makes you wonder how many fixes are actually pretty simple.
