Spent a whole Friday chasing a phantom knock on a 6.7 Powerstroke
The truck came in from a farm near Salina with a solid knock at idle. I checked the obvious stuff, injectors, lifters, you name it. After 7 hours of tearing into it, my apprentice pointed out a loose heat shield on the turbo downpipe that was tapping the block. Felt like a total goof. Anyone else ever waste a day on a noise that simple?

Chasing a simple rattle for hours is the worst lol. I once pulled a transmission pan over a noise that turned out to be a socket rolling around in the frame rail. The easy ones make you feel like you need to hand in your toolbox. At least your apprentice caught it, mine just handed me the wrong wrench the whole time.

Man, I wouldn't call that a waste. Your process found the problem, even if the source was silly. A solid apprentice is the one who spots the simple stuff you're too deep to see. That's a win, not a goof.
