I finally stopped posting my art at 1080p

A gallery owner in Seattle told me my portfolio looked 'soft' on their 4K monitor. I checked my export settings and realized I'd been saving everything at 72 DPI for years. Anyone else have a specific resolution they export at for online portfolios?

Holy crap, 72 DPI for years? That's brutal. I feel that pain in my soul. I export everything at 300 DPI for my portfolio, minimum. Even for web, I save the master file huge, then scale a copy down for posting. You gotta assume people are looking on retina displays now.

But does anyone actually notice the difference?

That line about assuming retina displays is the whole problem. People don't notice good quality, they only notice when it's bad. A sharp image just looks normal. But a pixelated mess? That's all they see and it makes you look sloppy. We've gotten used to ignoring low-res stuff because it's everywhere. It's a race to the bottom where just being clear is now a high standard.
