I changed my mind about using wood filler for big gaps in trim

For years I would just pack wood filler into any gap, even a half inch one, before painting. I saw my neighbor's trim in Springfield crack after just one winter because he did the same thing. The filler doesn't move with the wood when it expands. Has anyone else switched to using backer rod and caulk for gaps bigger than a quarter inch?

Welcome to the club, @jones.mason, it's a pretty awful club to be in. Nothing like that special moment when you realize exactly how you messed up. The universe really has a way of teaching lessons you didn't sign up for. Guess we all get that one free trial of regret.
