I dropped $150 on a fancy orbital sander for a table refinish and it left these awful swirl marks everywhere.

I mean, I followed the instructions, used the right grits, and kept it moving, but now my oak tabletop looks like a bad car paint job, so does anyone know how to actually fix this without starting over?

My buddy had that exact problem with his deck. He ended up hand-sanding the whole thing with the grain using a sanding block, which took forever but finally got rid of the swirls. He said the orbital just dug in too much on the softer parts of the wood.

My first orbital sander did the same thing on a pine dresser. I switched to a random orbital model and the swirls stopped completely. The tool really does make all the difference.
