Changed my tune on spray paint after a backyard disaster
Ngl, I used to think spray paint was foolproof for outdoor metal. But my patio chairs are now a sticky, peeling mess, and I'm never skipping primer again.

Did you use the kind meant for metal? I made that mistake on a garden gate once and it bubbled up in two days. Primer is the only thing that sticks to outdoor metal for real, it bites into the surface. Without it, any moisture or heat just lifts the paint right off. Now I have to scrape all that gunk off and start over, which is the worst part. A lesson you only need to learn once.

So how much sanding are we talking, like a quick once-over or a full strip-down?

What primer did you end up using? @dianamiller's right about it needing to bite in, but scuffing the surface with sandpaper first makes a huge difference too.
