Just realized oil-based primer is worth the hassle
I always used water-based primer for everything because cleanup is easy. But last month I painted some knotty pine paneling in my basement and the knots bled through after two coats. I sanded it down, tried an oil-based primer from Sherwin-Williams for $28 a gallon, and the top coat looks perfect three weeks later. Has anyone else had better luck with oil-based primer on tricky wood surfaces?

Oil-based primer is definitely the move for anything with knots or stains. Water-based just can't seal the tannins the same way no matter how many coats you throw on. Worth the extra cleanup hassle for a job that actually stays done.
