My old way of painting trim was a total mess until I saw a trick online

I used to just tape everything off and hope for the best, which always left me with messy lines and hours of touch up. Then I watched a video from a painter in Seattle who showed how to use a small angled brush and a steady hand instead of tape. I tried it on my living room baseboards last month and it cut my time in half, plus the lines are way cleaner. Anyone have other brush techniques for tricky corners?

That trick about using a small angled brush instead of tape is a total game changer. I read an article from a guy who does historic home restorations, and he said the key for tricky inside corners is to load the brush, then push the bristles into the corner and let the paint flow off. It keeps you from overworking it and leaving brush marks. Takes some practice but it works way better than trying to swipe at it.

Honestly that "steady hand instead of tape" advice sounds like a great way to make a mess for most people. I tried the no tape method once and it was a disaster, my lines looked wobbly and I got paint all over the floor. For tricky corners, @susan488, that "push the bristles" tip seems like it would just force a big blob of paint into the corner and cause drips. Good quality painter's tape gives you a perfect line every single time without needing years of practice. The extra few minutes to tape is worth it to not have to fix mistakes later.
