Water stain removal trick I stumbled across by accident

I was restoring an old family Bible that got wet in a basement flood. I read online that a mix of distilled water and a tiny bit of dish soap could lift water stains from paper without smearing the ink. Tried it on a test page first, and I was shocked how well it worked. Anyone else find a random household product that saved a document?

Question how badly stained it really was before you tried this? I've seen people freak out over a tiny water ring on a coffee table book and call it "ruined" when it's barely noticeable. Paper is way more fragile than folks give it credit for, and that dish soap can leave a residue that attracts more dirt over time if you don't rinse it perfectly. Plus, if the ink was water-based or the Bible had any gold leaf edges, that soap could lift the gilding right off. I'm not saying it didn't work for you, but I'd be careful calling it a trick before you see how it holds up in six months.

Yeah I totally get where you're coming from with this. It's so easy to think a little stain is the end of the world when paper is involved, but really it could have been nothing. I've definitely ruined a few paperback covers myself by going overboard with a damp cloth and making the whole thing curl up. The residue from dish soap is a real issue too, I've noticed that on my kitchen counters even after I think I've rinsed everything clean. And you're right about the gold leaf, I bet a lot of people don't even think about that until the letters start flaking off a month later. It's just one of those things where the "quick fix" might cause more problems down the road.
