I finally understood why that old hotel elevator kept tripping the overload

I was working on a 1980s traction unit in a downtown hotel last month, and the overload would cut out every afternoon. I checked the weights and the motor, but it was fine. Then I watched the cleaning crew load their big, heavy cart on the 10th floor for three days straight. They were hitting the call button, then rolling the cart on, which was just enough extra sudden weight to trip the old relay. Explained it to their manager and we set a simple loading procedure. Has anyone else had a weird, repeated user habit cause a fault that looked purely mechanical?
