Showerthought: The old city hall elevator went from weekly callbacks to zero in a month after we swapped the controller.

It was a 1978 relay panel that finally died, and the new solid-state one we put in just runs smoother (and quieter, honestly). Anyone else seen a jump that big just from a controller swap?

Remember my buddy's old unit that finally quit last summer. He had ignored the weird noises for months, just like @zarapalmer mentioned. The thing literally started smoking one afternoon, not full flames but enough to scare his whole family. The repair guy said the wiring was so brittle it just gave out. They had to replace the whole system during a heat wave, cost a fortune. It was a total mess that could have been avoided.
