I heard a neighbor say 'I'm just not a plant person' while throwing out a dead fern

It was last Tuesday, and I was taking out my own trash. My neighbor, Sarah, was tossing this big, sad fern into the bin and said that line to her husband. It hit me because I used to say the exact same thing. For years, I'd buy a cute plant, water it when I remembered, and then watch it die. I must have killed at least five succulents, which are supposed to be easy! I finally asked a friend who gardens what I was doing wrong, and she told me to just stick my finger in the dirt to check for moisture instead of guessing. It sounds so simple, but that one tip changed everything. My snake plant has been alive for eight months now, which is a record for me. It taught me that calling yourself 'not a something person' is often just a cover for not knowing a few basic rules. Has anyone else had a small tip completely flip a skill you thought you were bad at?
